Lady Mustangs Fall in Mesa State Tourney Action

Mesa State College women's basketball team (1-2) notched their first victory of the season with a 79-58 victory over Western New Mexico in the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic at Brownson Arena.

MSC had four players in double figures, shooting 51.5 percent (17-33) in the second half. The Mavericks trailed by six at intermission and by as many as many as 17 early in the second half (18:04). With 11:47 remaining in regulation MSC went on a 16-2 run for a 56-52 lead and never trailed again.

The Lady Mustangs (0-5) were led in scoring by Nicole Ruegsegger who had 17 points. Tannesia Manley notched a double-double in the contest with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

For Mesa State, sophomore Brittany Fowler had a game high 24 points, 22 in the second half. Fowler was 6 of 8 from behind the arc, including six consecutive treys. Fowler finished the contest with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Cassie Hutto recorded 18 points going 6 of 7 from the floor and pulling down four rebounds. Senior guard Brittany Rowley added 16 points, five assists and three rebounds. Katie DeRosa had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Junior Allison Piekarski had a team high eight rebounds.

Western New Mexico returns to the floor again Saturday in the tourney.
